Websites for small businesses
Websites can be large complex animals that require a whole army of expensive developers and designers to construct and then maintain, or they can be small friendly beasts that are easily put together at home or office and then altered at will, requiring only the cost of your time.
How websites work
Websites are a combination of pages and links between the pages. These all sit on a computer (called the server) which is running 24/7 and is usually owned by a company that specialises in keeping them going. These are known as 'host' companies.
There are now two major ways of constructing a site. The first is to assemble it on your own PC and then transfer (upload) it to the server or the alternative is to use a programme that is already on the server and then you simply upload the text and pictures directly on to the blank pages provided. The former can be very flexible but rather complicated whilst the second is far easier but rather restricted in what can be done.
Content management systems (CMS)
The programmes that enable you to build a site directly on the server rather than your own PC are known as Content Management Systems. This site uses one called SiteStudio. It is supplied free by the hosting company we use along with several other applications such as the Coppermine picture galleries.
